Pigs and Grandchildren

At our meeting on 18th September, member Tony Woodward spoke to us on the subject of ‘ Grandchildren and Pigs and How to Tell the Difference’ He told us that he looked for a hobby after retiring from work in the construction industry. It wasn’t enough to learn to fly and be chairman of the local football club. So late in 2016 he  bought three piglets – not any old piglets but local rare breed the Oxford Sandy and Brown. The first thing he learned concerned the regulations and reams of paperwork involving every aspect of their lives.  But he soon realised the contrast between the pigs – who kept their sty pristine, had a set area for their toilet and ate everything – and his grandchildren who didn’t. We heard many interesting facts and anecdotes about both pigs and grandkids but the main difference is that the pigs were being fattened up to be butchered and the grandchildren weren’t. It’s an expensive business keeping pigs and Tony estimated that his first sausage had cost him about £600!
